The mining of Belgian slate was first documented in 1625. Pliny (a Roman scholar from 23-79 AD) already mentioned special whetstones from the Ardennes in his writings. In this approximately 480 million-year-old slate sedimentary rock made of volcanic ash and clay, the finest garnets (5-20 microns) are embedded in veins of 5-20 cm. The blue Belgian slate contains approximately 30% embedded garnets and has a grain size of 5000-6000. It is very easy to use. Used with water, it maintains and sharpens the cutting edges of knives and tools without leaving a burr. Natural stone, approx. 200 x 60 x 14 mm. Benchstone, grain size: 5000-6000.
